2012 IIF Annual Membership Meeting
The 2012 IIF Annual Membership Meeting was held October 11-13 at the Palace Hotel Tokyo in Tokyo, Japan and marked the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the IIF. We were pleased to have the support of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Mizuho Financial Group, Inc., and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. as the Lead Sponsors for the meeting and the strong support of the government of Japan in staging the first-ever full IIF Membership Meeting in Japan.
The meeting was attended by an influential audience from throughout the global financial community, including many of the world’s leading bankers, policymakers, and investors. The program agenda was designed to appeal to our international membership while also having sessions focusing on the Asia/Pacific region and Japan in particular. We were delighted to welcome keynote addresses from U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner, Japanese Finance Minister Koriki Jojima, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría, Italian Minister of Economy and Finance Vittorio Grilli, Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa, and Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
The program began with special briefing sessions on the development and integration of Asian financial markets, implementation and peer reviews of Basel standards, and sovereign debt restructuring. The program continued with sessions focusing on Japan’s recovery, exploring approaches in coping with natural disasters, and discussing the opportunities and challenges ahead for Japan.
Friday’s program featured our IIF economic presentations, as well as two plenary discussions, one on addressing bank resolution, bank structure, and systemic risk, and one on the global outlook and risks. The evening featured our opening reception and dinner with a special tribute to the IIF’s 30th Anniversary. The final day of the program included plenary sessions on the Euro area crisis and opportunities and challenges for Asia and ended with a closing luncheon.
