The IIF Asia-Pacific Chief Risk Officer Forum was held on November 12-13 in Shanghai, hosted by Ping An Insurance Company. The Forum brought together senior risk officers to exchange ideas and insights and featured a range of discussion topics led by practitioners, consultants and IIF experts.

Topics included China interest rate liberalization, risk culture, AML, cyber-security, and doing business in a low interest-rate environment. There was also extensive discussion of the global regulatory reform agenda (particularly GSIB/GSII requirements and TLAC), and their potential implications for the Asia-Pacific region.

Held September 29-30 in Manama, Bahrain, and hosted by Gulf International Bank, the Forum addressed the challenges of economic diversification and meaningful job creation in the oil-producing economies, prospects for political stability and sustainable economic growth in the transition (“Arab Spring”) countries, global energy markets and the future role of the MENA oil producers in global energy supplies, and prospects for Arab economic cooperation and private sector intra-regional capital flows in the wake of the “Arab Spring.”

The IIF held its 2014 IIF Annual Meeting of Latin America Chief Executives on September 9-10. The meeting was hosted by Banorte at the St. Regis Hotel in Mexico City and brought together CEOs and seniors officials from Latin American Banks and global financial institutions to engage in discussion on key issues facing the region and its financial sector. This year’s program focused on the global and regional economic outlook, challenges from post-crisis regulation, and financial inclusion.

The 2014 IIF Spring Membership Meeting was held June 4-6 at the Central Hall Westminster in London.

The meeting was attended by an influential audience from throughout the global financial community, including many of the world’s leading bankers, policymakers, and investors. We were delighted to welcome keynote addresses from Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem, BBC Political Editor Nick Robinson, Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell, and ECB Vice President Vítor Constâncio, and a panel discussion featuring UBS Group CEO Sergio Ermotti, Barclays CEO Antony Jenkins, and SMFG Chairman of the Board Masayuki Oku. Program sessions addressed the macroeconomic outlook and prospects for the global economy, the role of the UK in Europe, the impact of technology on financial services, breakout sessions on regional issues, cyber security, internationalization of the RMB, the future of finance, and financial inclusion.

The 2014 Asia Pacific Chief Risk Officer Forum, hosted by Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, was held in Tokyo, Japan from May 21-22.

The Chief Risk Officer Forum provides members with the opportunity to identify and discuss key risk management issues of relevance to banks in the region, analyze regional and global regulatory trends, share knowledge and expertise on risk management issues (including training opportunities) and to conduct a regional dialogue with banking regulators. In sum, we seek to facilitate members’ efforts to continue strengthening risk management capabilities and to develop pragmatic approaches to implementing new regulatory developments in the Asia Pacific region.

The Third Plenum sets out an impressively broad albeit ambitious roadmap for reform in China over the next decade aimed at the transformation to a market-oriented economy for sustained and more balanced growth.

The China Economic Forum was held in May 19-20 in Shanghai, China, and hosted by Bank of Communications. The program featured a lively exchange of ideas and views with policymakers, senior officials and market participants to assess reforms, implementation plans and economic prospects. The forum began with a welcoming dinner on the evening of Monday, May 19 and was followed by one full-day of discussions on May 20, 2014.

The 2014 Annual Meeting of Central and Eastern European Bank Chief Executives, generously sponsored by PKO Bank Polski, took place on May 15 in Warsaw.

The IIF CEE CEO Meeting is a special regional event held every year as part of the Institute’s efforts to strengthen relations with and among our members in the region. The event facilitates an ongoing and robust public-private sector dialogue and helps participants gain a better understanding of the challenges of operating in an increasingly globalized economy. Participants this year discussed a range of topical issues relevant to banks and other financial firms active in the Central and East European region, with a focus on the impact of recent economic and regulatory developments as well as the evolving landscape for the Euro Area banking sector and financial markets.

The 2014 MENA Chief Risk Officer Forum, hosted by National Bank of Fujairah, was held May 7-8 in Dubai, UAE.

The Chief Risk Officer Forum provides members with the opportunity to identify and discuss key risk management issues of relevance to banks in the region, analyze regional and global regulatory trends, share knowledge and expertise on risk management issues (including training opportunities) and to conduct a regional dialogue with banking regulators. The program sought to facilitate members’ efforts to continue strengthening risk management capabilities and to develop pragmatic approaches to implementing new regulatory developments in the MENA region.

Senior public officials from both mature and emerging market economies, leaders from the private finance sector, and representatives from international financial institutions participated in a Roundtable discussion on International Capital Markets and Emerging Markets in Washington DC. The Roundtable is a major annual event, and a key forum for the exchange of views among key decision makers in both the public and private sectors on global policy issues and sovereign debt market developments.

With the upcoming IMF/World Bank Spring meetings and the current debate over the US government’s commitments to increase funding and reform quotas at the Fund, IIF cohosted an event with the Peterson Institute and the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) to discuss the true value of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to the United States and to the world economy. Speakers included C. Fred Bergsten, James Boughton, Charles Collyns, Anna Gelpern, Athanasios Orphanides, and other leading experts.
