Mr. Takashima joined The Sumitomo Bank, Limited in April 1982. In 1987, he joined the bank’s cross-border M&A advisory team and spent several years working in both Tokyo and New York. This began his career in the arena of global banking. Mr. Takashima was promoted to Joint General Manager of the Planning Department, International Banking Unit following the merger of The Sumitomo Bank and Sakura Bank. In March 2003, Mr. Takashima transferred to SMBC New York Branch to become General Manager of the Planning Department, The Americas Division. In October 2006, he repatriated to Tokyo to head the project team responsible for the formulation of SMBC’s new Medium-Term Management Plan. Mr. Takashima then returned to the global banking arena as General Manager of the Planning Department, International Banking Unit. Mr. Takashima was appointed as an Executive Officer of SMBC in April 2009. From April 2010 to March 2012, as Executive Officer and General Manager of the Corporate Planning Department, Mr. Takashima was responsible for bank-wide planning and strategy. This included working through the aftermath of the global financial crisis and enhancing SMBC’s capital and liquidity positions to cope with the new global regulatory environment. From April 2012 to March 2014, Mr. Takashima held the post of Managing Executive Officer and CEO of The Americas Division. In April 2014, he was promoted to Senior Managing Executive Officer, Member of the Management Committee, and took the position of Co-Head of the International Banking Unit. In December 2016, Mr. Takashima took on the added responsibility of an SMBC Director. In April 2017, Mr. Takashima was appointed as President and CEO of SMBC. In June 2017, he was appointed as a Director of SMFG. Mr. Takashima is scheduled to conclude his current assignment as President and CEO of SMBC on March 31, 2023, and commence his new assignment as Chairman of the Board, SMBC on April 1, 2023. Outside of his duties at SMBC, Mr. Takashima has served twice as Chairman of the Japanese Bankers Association (April 2019 to March 2020 and July 2021 to June 2022, respectively). Mr. Takashima also serves on the Institute of International Finance's Board of Directors (starting April 2017) and Executive Committee (starting October 2019). Born on March 31, 1958, Mr. Takashima holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Faculty of Law, Kyoto University and a Master of Laws degree from the Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley. He is married with two sons. He enjoys reading, and is an avid concertgoer, often scanning the critical reviews of important concerts and historical recordings.
