FRT Episode 53: Chris Giancarlo and the Digital Dollar

With a growing focus on digital currencies, beyond Libra and with several potential Central Bank Digital Currency solutions emerging, former CFTC Chairman Chris Giancarlo joins us to describe the proposal he and his former Daniel Gorfine have launched for a ‘digital dollar’.

Recorded in the exhibition halls of the Singapore FinTech Festival, Chris recounts the historical value placed on convenience as a key reserve currency attribute and sets out the importance for a digital dollar solution that is inclusive and interoperable for other market participants. He highlights a key US constitutional requirement that protects the privacy of currency data, an increasingly significant factor.

We also discuss the scale and the key themes of the Singapore FinTech Festival: the energy of the 65,000 participants, and the increasing focus on partnerships between incumbent firms and new technology providers.
